classic tour of grosseto
Length of Tour: 3 hours
Grosseto is the provincial capital and cultural center of the Maremma. It is a small medieval town with none of the chaos you find in larger cities. The historical center, almost entirely devoid of vehicular traffic, is enclosed within 16th-century walls including a recently restored keep, a type of fortified tower, built by the Medici. With your local guide, you will actually stroll along a section of the walls.
You will continue to explore the historical center and visit Piazza del Duomo, where Palazzo Aldobrandeschi is located. The palazzo is in Gothic Revival style recalling medieval Sienese architecture.
The Duomo or Cathedral of San Lorenzo was built between the 14th – 15th centuries. Its stunning façade is made of alternating bands of red and white marble giving it a unique aspect especially in comparison to the rest of the religious architecture in Tuscany.
We will visit the Church of San Francesco to admire the splendid crucifix by Cimabue.
It is also possible to visit the Archeological Museum which hosts artifacts found in the Maremma area in addition to a rich collection of Sienese medieval art work. An entrance fee is required.
Please note: entrance fees are extra.
