The province of Grosseto is the most extensive in the region of Tuscany and it occupies the entire south part of the region. Its territory is very diverse: the islands, the best known of which are Giglio and Giannutri, the Argentario promontory, originally an island which slowly connected itself to the mainland creating the lagoon of Orbetello, the Colline Metallifere (literally, metal-bearing hills), the volcanic Monte Amiata, and the Maremma, which is an extensive stretch of coastline, hills, and nature, in addition to being home to the buttero, the Tuscan cowboy.
Grosseto is the administrative and cultural center of the Maremma. The city is enclosed by Renaissance walls complete with bastions and curtains that bring to mind Lucca’s Walls, Florence’s Fortezza da Basso, and Siena’s Forte Belvedere. By visiting the Duomo of San Lorenzo and following a route comprised of other churches and palazzos, you will learn about the vicissitudes that Grosseto suffered under the alternating dominions of Siena and Florence.
