Pistoia is a gem but not well known. A restoration of many of its buildings and monuments has made the city return to its former splendor. Thanks to its history, architecture, art and culture, the city is finally receiving the attention it deserves.

In the historical center, the places to see are the Duomo, Baptistery, Church of Sant’Andrea, Church of San Giovanni Fuorcivitas, Museo dello Spedale del Ceppo, a 13th-century hospital with Della Robbia glazed terracotta pieces and the Museo della Sanità, Museum of Health, that has a rich collection of medical and surgical instruments that belonged to the School of Medicine.

There are many museums to choose from. We suggest visiting the Civic Museum which hosts the noteworthy art of Pistoia from the 13th – 20th centuries. The Marino Marini Museum is for lovers of contemporary art and the Museum of Embroidery introduces guests to an extremely refined and complex local craft in which Pistoia has always been a center of excellence.

It is also interesting to get to know the traditions and food and wine of the area. Pistoia has been producing a very particular type of confetti candy since 1300. Confetti candy are used to celebrate milestone events in Italy like baptisms, communions, weddings, university degrees, and anniversaries. The hand crafted roundish lumpy confetti (looks sort of like a hedgehog) can be found in local pastry shops.

From Pistoia, it is easy to reach various towns and hamlets such as Montecatini Terme, the spa town where its Art Nouveau buildings transport us back to the times of the Belle Époque when refined elegance reigned. The small medieval town of Pescia, renowned for its flower production, is well preserved. And we must not forget Collodi.

Collodi is home to the most famous burattino, an animated wooden marionette, in the world: Pinocchio. You can also admire the splendid historic Villa Garzoni with its gardens and butterfly house.
