The cradle of double-edged Tuscan satire, home to the “Four Moors” chained to the feet of Ferdinand I, Livorno was, and still is, Tuscany’s most important access to the sea, along with its warm winds and storms.
In its shipyards, boats were built for the forefathers sailing for the New World. Livorno welcomed all those that were persecuted for their religious beliefs, giving way to the first example of a peaceful and civilized coexistence between Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish communities. The latter built the most important Synagogue of Europe in Livorno.
Irreverent and “damned” painters like Modigliani were born in Livorno, as were expert composers like Mascagni (Cavalleria Rusticana), and the wonderful ‘poets of color’ known as the Macchiaioli, whose captivating paintings can be admired at Villa Mimbelli.
